Kaczor and Wiiest Awarded MRNRD Scholarship

Curtis – Two local students start college this fall with scholarship assistance form the Middle Republican Natural Resources District (MRNRD). The MRNRD Board of Directors recently selected the recipients of their 2006-07 College Scholarships. Kay Kaczor of Curtis and Matthew Wiiest of Moorefield each received the $200 scholarships.

The Middle Republican NRD offers two scholarships each year to two district students planning to complete an agricultural course of study. Applicants are ranked according to their financial need, academic performance, and enrollment in a natural resources or an agricultural course of study. Preference is given to students attending McCook Community College (MCC) and the Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture (NCTA).

Both Kaczor and Wiiest are recent graduates of Medicine Valley High School. Kaczor, the daughter of Waneta Storm and Joesph Kaczor, is attending Chadron State College this fall, where she will major in Agri-business Administration. Kaczor held many leadership roles in the Medicine Valley FFA Chapter for her four years of high school. She told the NRD Board, “I believe that my agricultural background will help me achieve all of [my] goals.”

Wiiest attends NCTA, where he is studying turf management. He is the son of Ronald and Joan Wiiest. Wiiest told the NRD Board that, “I am the last of seven children. All of my brothers and one sister have attended NCTA and I want to follow in their footsteps…I have worked hard in being a part of the community and hope to continue to do so by volunteering in different capacities.”

Scholarship applications are made available each January to counselors at schools within the Middle Republican NRD. Applications are accepted each year from January 1 to April 1. For more details, visit http://www.mrnrd.org.
